Long home to an aboriginal people called the Beothuks, our islands were then discovered by the Europeans: first the Portuguese, then the French in the 16th century. Fishermen from Brittany, Normandy and the Basque Country founded the town of Saint-Pierre, and their descendants still live on the archipelago today. Later they were joined by the Acadians, who chose to make Miquelon their home.
